Royal Lapis Gulbadan Necklace

Lapis lazuli has been mined in Afghanistan for over 6,000 years. The blue is lazurite. The gold fleck is pyrite, formed in the same conditions that produced the color. The three rectangular focal stones stacked along the spine here show the calcite variation that tells you the material is unenhanced.

Gold tube beads run the horizontal load; blue teardrop fringe drops from the lower edge. A stamped gold filigree medallion with a black glass center closes the bottom point. The gold beadwork is a direct palette match to the pyrite in the stone.
